Leonardo Posenato and the Beauty of Sacred Art in Mosaic

The Need for Beauty

As Pope Paul VI once recalled, “creating a work of art is not static, mathematical. There is a dialogue between the author, the work, and the artist.” It is within this dialogue that the work of Leonardo Posenato, architect and mosaicist, finds its true meaning. Each piece is crafted with devotion and mastery, transforming stone, ceramic, and gold into expressions that bring humanity closer to the divine.

An Artist Shaped by Tradition and Time

Hello! My name is Leonardo Posenato, and my journey with art began very early. I come from a family of artists: my mother, a talented musician; my father, the architect and historian Júlio Posenato, whose work is even featured on Wikipedia. Our family carries deep roots in Italy, in the region of Verona, where for nearly a century we have cultivated artisanal wines — which we also regard as a true form of art.

I studied music at the Projeto Prelúdio at UFRGS, playing the violin for ten years while also attending art classes at the Ateliê Livre of Porto Alegre’s City Hall. In 1998, I began my architecture studies and, in the same year, left for Italy. I spent three years at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, near Venice, immersing myself in the secrets of Roman, Greek, Byzantine, and Medieval mosaics. Those were years of archaeological research, artistic discoveries, and learning from Italian masters who shaped my worldview.

Upon returning, I founded my studio in 2001, completed my degree in Architecture at UFRGS in 2010, and continued investing in knowledge. In 2013, I studied classical architecture in Vicenza with Professor Howard Burns. My path has always been guided by the belief that art — whether through music, mosaic, or architecture — is a bridge between the visible and the invisible.

The Studio and Sacred Works

Today, with more than two decades of experience, I lead a studio dedicated to the creation of artistic and decorative mosaics in marble, granite, ceramics, and porcelain. We work on projects that adorn the façades of churches, chapels, devotional spaces, as well as public works.

Among the most significant pieces are sacred mosaics that combine technique, faith, and symbolism:

Pantocrator – One of the largest works, created for the Diocese of Limeira/SP. The face of Christ, composed of tiny fragments of granite, was an extraordinary challenge. The golden background brings light and strength to this representation of the Almighty.

Saint Paul – A monumental panel measuring 2.75 × 5.15 m at Paróquia São Paulo Apóstolo (Ibitinga/SP), produced in marble and granite, with a golden halo symbolizing holiness.

The Woman with the Issue of Blood Touches Jesus – Inspired by the contemporary Byzantine style, this mosaic depicts the very moment of the miracle in which faith brings healing. A scene of hope and compassion, enriched with golden details.

The Miracle of Cana – The transformation of water into wine, the first public manifestation of Jesus, represented through stone jars and colors that narrate the passage from the ordinary to the sacred.

Our Lady of Grace – A 200 × 400 cm panel created for the Mitra Diocesana de Campo Limpo/SP. Stones, ceramics, and a golden background create a luminous effect that symbolizes divine grace.

Sacred Symbols – The Lamb of God, crafted with stones from Brazil and around the world, and the Eucharistic Pelican, which evokes the sacrifice of Christ in the Eucharist. Both works are composed of marble and granite with a golden background.
